Turtle River Pursuit to be held February 15-16, 2020
Mercer, WI– MECCA Ski Club is excited to announce the Second Annual Turtle River Pursuit Cross Country Ski Race will be held the weekend of February 15th and 16th, 2020 at MECCA Trails in Mercer, Wisconsin. The pursuit race combines two disciplines of cross-country skiing – classic and freestyle – into one combined time event. The first leg of the Pursuit, an 11K classic race, will be on Saturday. The second leg, an 11K freestyle race, on Sunday. Saturday’s results determine the skier’s starting time on Sunday. The first skier and team to cross the finish line on Sunday wins the two-day race. The race is open to both individuals and two person teams. Awards will be given to the top three male and female individuals, as well as the top three teams. Age-group winners will also receive awards. The 11K races are a great opportunity for first time racers and serious skiers to get out on the MECCA Trails.
New this year is the Claire d’Loon 5K Classic Tour, a classic style race, offered on Saturday, February, 15th at MECCA. The shorter course is designed for recreational skiers as well as more experienced skiers looking for a shorter race. It’s perfect for families and friends looking for a fun, casual ski. The Tour is timed and awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female racers.
The early-bird fee for the Pursuit is $50 for individuals, $25 for students, $90 for teams, and $45 for student teams. After December 31, fees increase. The cost to participate in the Claire d’Loon Classic is $15 for skiers 15 & under and $30 for skiers 16 & older. Online registration and downloadable forms are now available at TurtleRiverPursuit.com.
The Turtle River Pursuit is presented by MECCA Ski Club in collaboration with the Gogebic Range Health Foundation as a fundraising event. Proceeds will be used for trail enhancement and expansion, as well as community outreach programs. This unique winter competition will attract hundreds of competitors, spectators, community volunteers and sponsors. Community sponsors include financial support, in kind contributions and volunteers. The Turtle River Pursuit promises to be an exciting event in the Wisconsin Northwoods.
